About me

I am Marcel Ruben (Beverwijk, Netherlands, 1972), a self-taught painter with a deep love for still life. My work grows in silence, built up layer by layer in oil paint. I do not search for speed or spectacle, but for attention to the overlooked: a bowl, a piece of fruit, the edge of a table — things that often pass unnoticed in daily life.
I taught myself to paint through years of looking, trying, and refining. Inspired by the classical masters of the 16th and 17th centuries as well as by contemporary realists, what began as a search for technique became a way of seeing and of living: painting as a practice of attentiveness and slowness.
My compositions are restrained, my palette deliberate, my atmosphere hushed. They invite the viewer to pause, to look beyond the obvious — and perhaps to find a moment of wonder or quiet prayer.
